 THE HULL CONFERENCE 2001

The forthcoming joint conference of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting and the International Association for Language and Business is promising to be an event you really cannot afford to miss. The conference will take place on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th November 2001 at the University of Hull, in the northeast of England.

The origin of the king's town upon the river Hull goes back to 1292. The city of Kingston-upon-Hull is very proud of its maritime heritage but also of its efforts in regenerating the port into a vibrant new city. Lying at the mouth of the Humber estuary, Kingston-upon-Hull has lots to offer: museums, entertainment, parks, quaint old pubs, modern shopping centres, an interesting night life and much more.

Hull can be reached by road, at the end of the M62 motorway, by air through Humberside airport, by rail with several direct daily services from London King's Cross and by boat from Rotterdam or Zeebrugge via P&O North Sea ferries.

The campus - which is home to over 10,000 students from all over the world - is situated north of the city centre in a pleasant residential area which is easy to reach by public transport. The conference will take place in "Staff House" at the heart of the campus.

Before the conference itself is due to start, there will be on - Thursday afternoon - the St-Jérôme seminar, for those interested in becoming assessors or moderators for the ITI examinations and assessments. The seminar is also opened to registered assessors and moderators. The number of places is limited so please indicate if you would like to participate in this activity.

For those arriving early or wishing to relax whilst testing their general knowledge, there will be an international quiz with a prize for the best team. The MC for the evening will be Mr Geoff Catterick, chairman of the Humberside Institute of Export and national chairman of the Institute of Freight Professionals. The conference itself is due to start on Friday morning. It will offer a range of activities and papers covering a variety of interests in our profession. In order to mark the European Year of Languages, there will be several presentations given by distinguished speakers working in or for the European institutions. Barry Wilson of the European Parliament will talk on Multilinguism in the EU, Robert Rowe of the Commission will address the practical issues linked to the introduction of new languages and how the translation service of the Commission is dealing with the situation, and Maria-Jose Palos from the Translation Centre will report on the IATE project.

In parallel to the conference, there will be two workshops offering practical help and advice: one on the procedure to follow to become a freelance translator for the EU and the other on Translating Commercial Video Material. Attendance at the workshops is free for conference delegates but the number of places is limited. Please book early.

The conference attempts to offer a balance between the world of language practitioners and that of academics. We have also included a business dimension and Mr Ian Campbell, former Director General of the Institute of Export, will give a paper on the status of languages in British businesses. There will be an opportunity to hear about two case studies in a workshop led by the Humberside European Business Information Centre.

The European Year of Languages seemed an ideal opportunity to look back on the history of translation. Dr Terry Hale, the recently elected chairman of the Translators Association, will lead the panel.

As well as attending presentations and workshops, conference delegates will have the opportunity to visit the exhibition and to meet colleagues. Publishers, software suppliers and service providers have already expressed a strong interest in the conference and pre-booked a stand. Time has been set aside for demonstrations.

No conference would be complete without a special dinner and we have booked the beautiful Jubilee Room at the University of Hull for this purpose. Musical entertainment will be provided by the University music department. The guest speaker at the Conference dinner will be the MEP Diana Wallis.

For those able to stay on Sunday and wishing to discover the area, we have organized a day trip to the Viking city of York and a walk in the old city of Hull. Please indicate on the booking form if you wish to take part in either of these activities.

Accommodation arrangements will be taken care of by the Hull Conference Bureau. Details will be provided once we have received your booking form for the conference. This is a free service for conference delegates.

We trust that you will find the conference programme attractive as well as professionally useful. We look forward to welcoming you to Yorkshire and to the gateway of Europe.

You will find a booking form with this issue of the Bulletin. Book your place now! We are offering a discount until 6th November 2001.
